Top talent on display for Region 8-A meet

There are a lot of uncertainties heading into Saturday and Monday's Region 8-A girls' track meet, but one thing is for certain: it's going to be competitive.

Although the region isn't large (only six programs competing), some of the top talent in Class A will be at Athens Academy trying to qualify for the state track championships in Albany, which will be held the second weekend in May.

"It's competitive and if you can get out of region in pretty much any event, you're going to be competitive when you go into the state level," Athens Academy coach Tom Pee said.

The top two performers in each event will receive an invite to state, which to most athletes is their goal.

For Athens Christian, the Lady Eagles think they have a shot to send someone in just about every event.

"We're pretty good all the way across the board in almost every event," Athens Christian coach Tim Cummings said. "We've got a chance to send somebody to state and maybe two people to state in most events, so that's our strength."

Between the schools of Region 8-A, many of the athletes are ranked high in Class A, including a couple that hope to win more than region.

Lisa Sheppard, a pole vaulter for Athens Academy, is the defending state champion and this year she has reached a personal best of 10 feet, 6 inches.

If she can reach that mark at the region meet, she is almost certain to head to state and try for a state record.
